Following the escape of an unknown number of sub adult Nile crocodiles (Crocodylus niloticus) from a facility outside of Bonnievale last week and Wednesday, CapeNature can report that to date a total of 50 can now be accounted for. The night patrols on the Breede River are ongoing with CapeNature partnering with a SAPS diving team, the facility owner and neighbouring land owners in recapturing the escaped reptiles.

The South African Police Services (SAPS) has availed four boats and eight police divers to assist in the nocturnal patrols searching for the escaped animals. Although a number of trap cages with bait were put out in a first attempt to recapture the animals, this method proved to be less effective since the escaped animals have access to an abundance of food in the river.

The overgrown river and dense vegetation on the riverbanks also make it very difficult to recapture these crocodiles. Being nocturnal animals the best time to search for them is at night, which brings its own challenges in terms of visibility. As time is of the essence, CapeNature and the search party partners were left with no choice, but to euthanize twenty of the crocodiles spotted. Although crocodiles are indigenous to South Africa, they are not part of the natural fauna of the Western Cape.

CapeNature is saddened by the extreme measure this operation is now requiring, but we regard the safety of the surrounding community first and foremost, which further accentuates the urgency of the recapturing of these wild animals. The situation remains fluid and the recapturing techniques have to be effective in the best interest of public safety.”

We need to emphasize that the onus remains on wildlife owners to strictly adhere to permit regulations. A thorough investigation will be led by CapeNature to ascertain whether there was a breach in complying to the regulations which could have resulted in the escape of these young crocodiles.”

CapeNature in partnership with SAPS, the facility owner and surrounding landowners will continue with the recapturing efforts through night patrols.

The area approximately 5km upstream towards Robertson, and 5km downstream towards Swellendam, remains the key area for surveillance and capture.

The public is urged to not attempt to approach any crocodiles, but to immediately report any sightings to the Bonnievale SAPS on 023-616 8060.

On Wednesday, 3 March 2021, an unknown number of subadult Nile crocodiles (Crocodylus niloticus) escaped from a legal breeding facility outside of Bonnievale.

The juvenile crocodiles managed to escape through a hole in a wired fence. They range in sizes from 1.2m to 1.5m.

CapeNature is leading a collective effort with the facility owner, local landowners and the South African Police Service to recapture the escaped crocodiles.

To date 27 (twenty-seven) crocodiles have been recaptured and returned to the facility. Dr Razeena Omar, CEO of CapeNature explained that the efforts include, “setting up of humane trap cages with bait on the riverside of the Breede River to attempt to recapture the remaining animals on the loose. Patrols on the river will be undertaken every night to catch these animals.” An area about 5km upstream towards Robertson and 5km downstream towards Swellendam is the key area for surveillance and capture.

The public is urged to stay clear of this part of the river. Landowners and community members on the riverbank have been informed of the situation.

The public is urged to not attempt to approach any crocodiles, but to immediately report any sightings to the Bonnievale SAPS on 023-616 8060 which set up a dedicated task team to deal with this incident.

The provincial Department of Health wants to ensure that no one is left behind when it rolls out its annual school immunisation programme from 1 March until 30 April 2021. Nurses from the Department will be visiting public schools to administer doses of the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine and the tetanus and diphtheria booster.

Girls in Grade 5, over the age of nine years (and those who missed last year’s vaccination due to the COVID-19 pandemic or school closures), with the necessary consent, will be eligible for the HPV vaccine. Boys and girls in Grade 5, over the age of nine years, with the necessary consent, will also be eligible for the Td-Diftavax booster this year during the first round of the HPV campaign.

In what has been an unprecedented period for childhood immunisations, lockdowns have made it harder for parents or caregivers to reach immunisation sessions. As one the most cost-effective prevention tools available, the Department believes that investing in HPV vaccination for girls can take us closer to eliminating cervical cancer, which is the leading cause of cancer among women aged 15 and 44 years in South Africa (South African Medical Research Council, 2019). The HPV vaccines provide a safe and highly effective means to reduce the burden of cervical cancer. Vaccination against HPV, which is passed from person to person through sexual contact, can protect against at least 70% of all cervical cancers.

Meanwhile, the tetanus and diphtheria booster doses strengthen or boost the immune system to give better protection against these two life-threatening diseases. Tetanus can lead to painful stiffening of the muscles, while diphtheria can lead to difficulty breathing and even heart failure.

As with all vaccinations, some girls may experience some bruising or redness at the vaccination site. In very few cases, due to nervousness and anxiety, some girls have reported vomiting and nausea, although this seems to be at the thought of being injected rather than a response to the vaccine.

Parents or caregivers must give their permission before allowing their daughters or sons to receive a medical intervention or procedure. For consent to be valid, it must be informed, understood and voluntary, and the person consenting must have the capacity to make the decision. Nurses will never administer vaccines and/or conduct general health assessments without the permission of parents or caregivers. It is important that parents or caregivers complete the necessary consent forms and submit them to the schools prior to the officials visiting.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has been tough for many parents and caregivers, and their school children. We acknowledge their concerns to vaccinate their children because they work hard to protect them every day. Vaccines are as important as feeding your child healthy foods or using a car seat or seat belt when travelling. If they have questions about vaccines, the vaccine schedule outlined in the Road to Health booklet, or how to catch up if their child did not start receiving vaccines during the pandemic, they can talk to their healthcare worker to make an educated decision,” said Sonia Botha, coordinator of the Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI) in the Western Cape.

Gesondheidsdepartement se immuniseringsveldtog skop af by skole

Ouers of versorgers moet hul toestemming gee voordat hul seuns of dogters ‘n mediese ingryping of prosedure ondergaan.
