HERITAGE DAY MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

Dear Residents of Langeberg

Heritage Day is an opportunity to pause and reflect on the stories, traditions and values that have shaped us and continue to influence the communities we live in today. Since becoming a national public holiday in 1994, with the first Heritage Day celebrated in 1995, 24 September has become a day for South Africans to recognise and celebrate the heritage we share and the many traditions that make our country unique.

Heritage is not only found in historic buildings and important landmarks. It lives in our languages, family traditions, music, food, stories, skills, and the knowledge passed from one generation to another. In Langeberg, these different forms of heritage are part of what gives our communities their character and tells the story of who we are.

As we celebrate this Heritage Day, let us remember that we are not only custodians of the heritage we have inherited, but also responsible for what we leave behind. By preserving our stories, respecting our traditions, and sharing our knowledge with future generations, we help ensure that our heritage remains a living part of our communities.
